On Dec. 20, 1984, 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews went missing from her Greeley home after singing in a school choir concert. She responded he had visions of grandeur, and it ran in their family. Hicks says on their way back to Greeley, Pankey insisted she turn on the radio. I said listen, "I have been very honest, I've been accessible to you any time you wanted, but I'm getting sick of this because I am innocent.". at their state convention, he claimed that they tried to do an exorcism on him. He testified about a call he got back in 2019, about a bizarre claim Pankey made in a letter to the media. At trial, Viorst told the jury that Pankey was a true-crime junkie. Jim Matthews was eventually cleared. Anthony Viorst: He was at home that night with his wife and child. On Monday, Hicks testified Pankey was less happy with his job when Ross became his boss at the 7 Up Bottling Company, especially after he was let go from his position over a legal battle Pankey started. So, Pankey said, he decided to speak publicly now, because of his concerns about law enforcements ideas about him, and because he is a public figure in light of his runs for office. Authorities last week searched the Twin Falls home of 68-year-old Steve Pankey, serving him a warrant that said investigators had probable cause to believe he kidnapped and killed Jonelle Matthews in 1984. It's believed she's the victim of a kidnapping. He faces two first-degree murder charges, two violent crime charges, and one second-degree kidnapping charge. A Despite Viorsts difficulty advancing in his examination, Yosts testimony revealed the following information about Drake: In 1989, Yost had an interview with Greeley Police Detective Keith Olson in which she made statements that Drake looked at young girls in binoculars. Jonelles case dates back to Dec. 20, 1984, when the young girl attended a school choir concert, received a ride home from her friends father and returned to an unoccupied home. Gloria Matthews: We are going to know that she was murdered [crying]. That's when Jonelle went to sing in a school choir concert. He was criminally charged, but the charge was later dismissed by prosecutors. STEVEN PANKEY: I wanna back up a little bit. Drake and Yost lived together from 1985-1987. If Pankey didn't kill Jonelle Matthews, then who did? Pankey also had an obsession with what Viorst referred to as murder mysteries. He loved the TV show Unsolved Mysteries and well-known unsolved murder cases, according to Hicks. Richard Schlesinger: What were the challenges facing the prosecution? Pankey said he had brushes with the law in Colorado before Jonelles disappearance that led police to mistrust him. It was agony for Jonelle's mother Gloria, who could no longer hope her daughter would come home. After an Aug. 13, 2013, phone call with the suspect, he still did not make a report, but Viorst said Olson wasnt in charge of investigating Pankey. The interviewer in the 1989 video of Drake also addressed past comments reportedly made by him, these included that he knew Jonelle and noticed she was maturing. Before stepping down from the stand, Pankeys sister confirmed she refused to talk about the case with police on April 15. Viorst asked if Pankey was ever unfaithful. Police might have been closer to an answer than they knew. This type of car fire is unusual, according to Andersen. Also, he was a candidate for a county sheriff in Twin Falls which, once again, wasn't a success story for him. And he took duct tape and wrapped it around the dog's muzzle. Richard Schlesinger: Is that in any way believable to you? Upon reviewing the full case, Olson testified to finding a supplement containing an account from Francis Drake, Norris Drakes mother. STEVE PANKEY [to KMVT]: I heard that a girl was missing from Greeley, Colorado. STEVEN PANKEY: So, the truth is that I made a lot of stuff up out of bitterness. Now under oath, Pankey said it was time to say truthfully that he was liar until now. The friend, Rochelle Davy, formerly known as Rochelle Baxley, said the car startled and agitated Jonelle. A politician, Steve Pankey was identified as the prime suspect after the victim's father was ruled out back in 1984. All right? five days before Christmas, Jonelle disappeared from her home. She further stated Pankey seems to want the attention.. Pankey said he wants his story to be heard in case he is arrested. In September 2001, Hicks filed for divorce from Pankey. MAYOR JOHN GATES: I was sitting at my desk one day some time back. There were two campaigns for governor, one for municipal council, one for lieutenant governor and three runs for county sheriff. Im trying to be transparent, he said. But keep in mind, I'm a 26-year law enforcement veteran. Pankey said he had gone to church with many people who knew Jonelle Matthews family, but he did not. Richard Schlesinger: Was Pankey questioned at all in the early days of this investigation? Nothing. Hicks shared a story Monday about witnessing her husband drive past the church following his removal. His son was friends with Pankey's son, Mark. But the most talkative person in this case had yet to be heard from. He testified that in the past he had lied about his knowledge of the case. But the District Attorney's Office felt they had enough evidence to go to trial. Mayor John Gates: I could see that goin' either way. And then I'd say other things and he'd say, "well, that's bull nobody's going to buy that.". Pankey, 71, is on trial for the second time for her kidnapping and murder. Last year, his first trial ended with a hung jury on the kidnapping and murder charges, but he was convicted for false reporting after he admitted to lying to law enforcement about the case during his testimony.
